What is a Nuclear Medicine exam?
Nuclear medicine scanning is used mainly to clarify issues about the organs that cannot be fully evaluated with conventional x-ray images. A nuclear medicine exam can reveal both anatomical and functional aspects of an organ.
A pharmaceutical radioactive isotope (low-level radioactive chemical) is administered and acts as a marker for the specific organs being imaged. The isotope stays in the body for a short period of time and is completely expelled in 1-2 days. Nuclear Medicine procedures are safe and painless.
Only certified nuclear medicine technologists may perform the procedure, and the results are evaluated by ACR-accredited radiologists. After evaluation, a report is forwarded to the referring physician.
